Star Wars Fundraiser - GFM ClearComms

In a galaxy far away, well actually at our head offices in Colchester, we held a Star Wars themed fundraising event on May 4th, which raised £226.30 in aid of Colchester based charity Open Road.

GFM ClearComms Supporting Open Road

Established in 1990 Open Road is a charity that provides support for individuals affected by drugs and alcohol across Essex and Suffolk. Its high quality services have empowered thousands of individuals and families to recover from the harmful impact of many addictive substances. In fact, last year alone the Colchester based charity supported over 6,000 people, with over 85% of them completing programmes with Open Road.

May the 4th History

May 4th is referred to as ‘Star Wars Day’ by fans of the cult space film series because of the pun on the catchphrase “May the Force be with you” as “May the Fourth be with you”. The first ever recorded use of this phrase was supposedly on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as UK Prime Minister when her political party placed a congratulatory advertisement in The London Evening News, saying “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.” Although the holiday was not created by Lucasfilm, Star Wars fans across the world fully embrace the day as an annual celebration of the films; and this year that will include our staff here at GFM!

GFM ClearComms Giving Back

As part of the charity event, we welcomed employees to work with Star Wars themed treats before the commencement of various fundraising activities, including a best-dressed competition, Star Wars quiz, space themed bake-off and raffle; as well as screening the much loved films throughout the day.
